Bottom Air Vent – The bottom air vent on Old-Style Heatilator Fireplaces are where cool room air is drawn into the fireplace. The air is then routed around the firebox and exits through the top air vent where it returns to the room as heated air.
Why is there a hole under my fireplace?
Underneath the ash dump is the ash pit, which is the place where dumped ash collects. The ash pit should be emptied frequently. This helps to prevent hazardous accumulation of flammable byproducts.
Do you close the flue on a wood stove?
Close the damper until nearly shut for overnight or maintenance fires, such as when you go out to the supermarket. The minimal airflow allows for smoldering coals and existing smoke to escape through the flue pipe, but not enough airflow for flames and mass consumption of the wood.

A burn time is the total amount of time a single load of wood will burn from ignition through to smoldering. This includes from the time you light a stove, to when the coals are hot enough that you can add another log and the fire ignites again (without having to use another match).
