Rubella, also called German measles or three-day measles, is a contagious viral infection best known by its distinctive red rash. Rubella is not the same as measles (rubeola), though the two illnesses do share some characteristics, including the red rash.

Why is rubella called German measles?

In April 2015 the World Health Organization declared the Americas free of rubella transmission. The name "rubella" is from Latin and means little red. It was first described as a separate disease by German physicians in 1814 resulting in the name "German measles".

Does having rubella give immunity to measles?

While both vaccines have a high immunogenicity, rubella immunity is shown to be somewhat lower than measles immunity.
