The glitch essentially makes use of the autosave feature in order to trick the game. Note that you can only duplicate as many items as you have in your inventory. That means if you have 2 royal crowns in your inventory, it will duplicate a maximum of 2, leaving you with 4 crowns in total.

First time would be the jagged crown, then during the battle for whiterun and battle for fort neugrad, he’s probably somewhere in the other battles. I think he is also in the crowd at the battle for solitude. Afterwards he can be found at the sleeping giant in riverwood, where he will stay for the rest of his life.
Can you kill Ralof or Hadvar?
No. He will show up later on in the Civil War quest line as a captain. Same with Hadvar. From what I read, in vanilla if you choose hadvar the game disables Ralof entirely removing him from the game.
What happens to Hadvar if you follow Ralof?
If you chose Ralof to follow, Hadvar is then unavailble to be seen in the rest of the game, since even if you enter both sides of the Keep, only Ralof’s route has one different room. Unless you use cheats to spawn them in, the opposing character you didn’t follow, will not be in game for the rest of Skyrim.
