Can I replace 700×23 with 700×28?

I upped my road tires from 700×23 to 700×28, and have been happy with the change. All those tests that demonstrate equal rolling resistance with wider tires assume that you will use a wider rim to go with the tire, but even without changing the rim, I doubt that the difference is even 5%.

Be advised that most riders are moving in the other direction and fitting wider tires, if they have enough frame/fork clearance to do so.

What does the C mean in bicycle tires?

Typical road bike tire: 700 x 32c indicates a tire that has an outer diameter of 700mm and a width of 32mm. (Note that the “c” does not stand for centimeters; it’s a holdover from an old French system that designated tire sizes using the letters a, b and c.)

Does bike tire width matter?

The main disadvantage to the wider tires is weight. Switching to a slightly narrower tire will give you a little better acceleration performance and provide a zippier ride.
