Which side of cement board goes up?
Cement board has a smooth side and a rough side. Face the rough side out if you will be using thin-set mortar adhesive to install the tile but the smooth side out if you will be using latex mastic.
Does it matter which side of Hardibacker board faces out?
Which side goes up, smooth or rough? Either is acceptable, but we recommend that the smooth side with the nailing pattern of every 8″ on center go up.
Does cement board have a front and back?
Cement board manufacturers imprint a gridlike pattern on one surface of the board. The back of cement board is plain, has no manufacturer-defining stickers and is void of the front-featured grid. Always install cement board with the grid facing out.
Does cement board need Thinset under it?
Not only is thinset a critical component underneath cement board but the other critical component is the fasteners. And you won’t have the fasteners if you are trying to install it over concrete.

Do you glue durock to studs?
No. No adhesive needed but most sources suggest a waterproof membrane over the studs; roofing felt works well.
How do you attach durock to studs?
Fasten to studs spaced 16″ o.c. Space fasteners 8″ o.c. for walls, 6″ o.c. for ceilings. Fit ends and edges of panels closely but not forced together. Wood framing: 1-1/2″ hot- dipped galvanized roofing nails or 1-1/4″ USG Durock™ tile backer screws for wood framing or equivalent.
Should I glue durock?
Even if the underlayment is plywood, it STILL should not be glued to the subfloor. ANY time you bond the layers of the subfloor together, you completely eliminate all the benefits of multi layering the floor, which, under tile, is mandatory.
How many screws do you put in durock?
Apply 1/8 to 1/4 thick latex- fortified portland cement to solid surface—never on top of carpeting or padding. Fasten DUROCK Brand Cement Board with 1-1/4 hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails or 1-1/4 DUROCK Brand Screws, spaced 8 o.c. in both directions, penetrating floor a minimum of 3/4.
How far apart do you screw durock?
Fasten panels to subfloor while the adhesive is wet with 32 mm (1-1/4″) CGC Durock Wood Screws or 38 mm (1-1/2″) hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails spaced 203 mm (8″) o.c. in both directions.
What kind of screws do you use for durock?
DUROCK Steel Screws, 42 mm (1-5/8) long, are used for applying 15.9 mm (5/8) DUROCK Cement Board to walls or ceilings. Application: —Use minimum 4-amp screwgun, recommended drill speed 2500 rpm. —Screw spacing is 200 mm (8) o.c. for walls, 150 mm (6) o.c. for ceilings.
