Should tonearm be level?

Should tonearm be level?

The arm does not matter. The cartridge mounting base being level vs the platter is what matters. A headshell should have a surface that is parallel to the cartridge mounting surface. A level being slightly off is also not that important as long as you use the same level for the platter and the headshell.

How is tonearm overhang measured?

If you measure the distance from the tonearm pivot (or know it otherwise) to the center of the platter and subtract it from the distance from the tonearm pivot to the stylus (effective length) the result is the overhang.

What is tonearm overhang?

The “overhang” is the pivot to spindle distance plus the amount the stylus literally “overhangs” beyond the spindle. If your arm allows, you can actually move it so the tube rests on top of the spindle and the distance from there to the stylus tip is the “overhang”, which is usually also specified in the arm’s specs.

How do I set my stylus pressure?

Setting stylus pressure is easy. Turn the anti-skating knob to 0. Then rotate the weight on back till the arm is in balance and tends to stay parallel to the base. Next, rotate the loose reticule on the weight till 0 lines up with the mark on the arm.

Why put a penny on the needle?

a coin on the headshell is just an old trick to add extra weight, in order to be able to “hot swap” between different pickups without having to reset the weight adjustment again. you should still follow the recommended tracking weight for it, lots of pickups even tend to skip more when set to heavy.

Is Crosley really that bad?

From personal experience they are pretty bad. I got a cruiser as a gift and it ran slow after less than an hour of play (slow enough to really notice it) not to mention the random skipping issues and bad sound. I replace it with a used pioneer I was able to find for not too much which is so much better.
