To encourage your discus to breed, feed them animal protein, like mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. Also, add a couple upturned flower pots or PCV pipes to the bottom of the tank so your fish have somewhere to lay eggs. If you notice a pair of fish spending more time together, they might be preparing to breed!
How often do discus lay eggs?
When and if the discus spawn in this stage, they will lay eggs every week for up to fifteen weeks. This cycle usually occurs twice a year and can be rigged with careful adjustment of feeding, temperature and water conditions.

originally the wild discus would produce 300-400 fry per spawn. hatched and raised artificially if my pairs did not produce an average of two hundred fry per spawn i would split up the pair. the largest successful spawn of solid turquoise i had was over 350 fry.
At what age do Discus start breeding?
The minimum number to give you the best odds of a breeding pair is at least 12 discus fish. This is mainly because it is impossible to visibly tell the gender when they are young. Females reach maturity and start mating at about 9 months of age but males take up to 13 months. The discus must form pairs on their own.
