Because finely crafted movies that are good at putting real (non computer generated) objects in motion are, like RW, are examples of pure cinema! People watch (well-crafted, worthwhile) action movies because they want to experience pure cinema.

We like watching horror films simply because it's entertaining. Personality tests reveal that those who are bored easily often score higher than others on a trait called “sensation seeking.” Several studies show that those who score high in regard to this trait, show an increased liking of horror films.

There is more to why we love watching movies than just entertainment and a way to pass time. Movies allow us to feel different emotions; thrill, happiness, sadness, intensity, comfort, shock, nervous all these roller-coaster of emotions is one reason why we love watching movies.

At it's source, the reason we watch movies is because we like to be entertained. Now there are plenty of other reasons people make movies, but for me, entertainment is the main reason to watch them, and that can be translated into whatever that means to you subjectively.
