A kickoff puts the ball in play at the start of each half, after a try, and after a successful field goal. A dropkick or placekick may be used for a kickoff. A dropkick, placekick, or punt may be used for a safety kick. A tee cannot be used for a safety kick.
Can you catch your own punt?
The team which catches their own punt cannot advance it. By punting the ball, they have already yielded possession to the opposing team. If it's a free kick, then it'd be a live ball (just like on a kick-off) and the kicking team can legally recover (biut not advance) as long as it had travelled 10 yards.
