Engineered to prevent damage to the sub-floor or wall cavity if moisture seeps through grouted tile, DensShield® Tile Backer is the first backer board with a built-in moisture barrier. Easier to handle than cement board, DensShield Tile Backer cuts and installs like drywall without special tools or fasteners.
How do you seal DensShield seams?
By caulking the intersecting corners of DensShield Tile Backer panels and around a tub base or shower pan with flexible sealant, a moisture-resistant envelope can be established. The sealant should be applied to the DensShield Tile Backer corners PRIOR to taping the joints.
Can you put backer board over drywall?
Because cement board can be used either for floors or walls, the surface below the cement board will vary: In such wet areas, never install cement board directly over drywall or green board. Instead, first, remove the existing surface material, then install the cement board over the studs and membrane, as applicable.

DensShield Tile Backer is composed of a water-resistant treated core that is covered front and back with fiberglass mats. The mats are permanently integrated with the core during manufacturing, preventing delamination problems that can occur with paper- faced greenboard.
